Professional Drain Installations

Whether it’s a first installation, an extension to an existing network or a complete drain replacement, correctly situating, seating and coordinating a drainage system is not an easy task and something that should never be attempted by amateurs. At No 1 PHD we have many years of experience in the fitting and repair of a multitude of water drainage pipes and systems and we are fully licensed and insured to carry out drain installations both simple and complex. From an initial survey to placing the last drain cover you can be assured of a first-rate, top quality drain installation that will give long years of trouble-free service.

Water, Water… Everywhere

There are numerous reasons why a water drainage system can go wrong and need to be replaced, updated, extended or reconfigured. Over time any drainage system will begin to deteriorate and leaks and blockages will become a problem. Having the system regularly inspected and cleaned will help extend the lifespan of the pipes and drains but eventually all water drainage systems will need to be partially or completely updated and replaced. Older drainage systems are particularly susceptible to cracks, leaks and blockages but these problems can also manifest themselves in newer systems that were laid and connected incorrectly or because no allowance was made for the earth shifting and settling around the pipes. Adding new sinks, toilets and water outlets to an existing system can also be problematical as the original drains may not have sufficient capacity to deal with the additional volume of water. For whatever reason, the time will come for a new drain installation.

Drainage Problems Solved

Like everything else in this world a drainage system is not perfect and will not last forever. The most common problem reported to us at No 1 PHD is a blockage which can be speedily dealt with by our emergency 24 hour drainage service team. Sometimes, however, a blockage is only the tip of the iceberg and is a direct result of more serious underlying problems.

Repair or Renew?

Houses built since the early 1970’s will most likely have separate drainage pipes for rainwater and household waste water. This should be the case as if there is just one drainage pipe, or the two pipes join together, then untreated waste water can contaminate the water table below the ground or nearby rivers. However, even modern buildings can have wrongly connected drainage systems because the builder installed the system incorrectly or additional washing machines, dishwashers or toilets have not been connected to the correct pipes. While it may be possible to repair an existing drainage system it is usually better to opt for a new drain installation which will be fit for purpose and able to cope with household demands for years to come.

Properly Planned and Installed

Before beginning any new drain installation, the No 1 PHD team will evaluate the terrain to determine which type of pipe to lay and the best configuration to ensure the optimum result. Our plumbers and technicians will devise a system that reduces external pipework and drain covers to a minimum so as to be as unobtrusive as possible. Once the planning is finalised the actual work begins. This involves:

  • Excavating trenches for the drains to the correct depths
  • Filling the bottom of the trenches with suitable bedding material
  • Laying, connecting and sealing the pipes
  • Checking the angles of slope in all sections of the pipe
  • Fitting of drain covers and covering of pipework
  • Final check to ensure water is flowing through the pipes precisely as it should

Getting the angle of slope right is vital in ensuring the new drainage system works as it should. Too shallow or too deep a slope will result in blockages and pipe damage. This is why drain installations should only be undertaken by qualified and experienced professionals.

Importance of Good Drainage

The importance of a good drainage system cannot be underestimated. Faulty or underperforming drainage will not be able to cope with large volumes of water that typically follow heavy rain. Water will back up and overflow leaving pools of water on the pavement or lawn. Not only is this water a nuisance but it is also dirty, often smelly and sometimes a health hazard.

After noticing that the house was unusually cold, we found that the heating wasn’t coming on and that our hot water had also failed. We called the team at No 1 PHD who dispatched an engineer to investigate. After discovering that the culprit was a faulty boiler part, they ordered in a new part and got it fitted as quickly as possible. The guys were great, and we couldn’t be happier.

For days, we’ve noticed a foul smell coming from outside and a gurgling sound coming from one of the drains. Whenever it would rain, the area around it would flood slightly and take ages to drain. We tried buying drain unblockers, but none seemed effective. Eventually, we turned to No 1 PHD and were left wondering why we didn’t do this sooner.
