Choosing the right radiator for the job

For many people, a radiator is a radiator. However, this is far from the truth. There is a great deal of variety in radiator designs and they each have their own best uses and advantages. From the design to the way it provides heat, at No1PHD our experts work with radiators every day and are well placed to choose the right solution for the job.

Radiators can be divided by power type. Central heating radiators are the most common type of household radiator and run off of the central heating to provide heat. Electric radiators, by contrast, contain a thermo-fluid that gets heated by an electric element to generate heat. These radiators run off of a mains electric socket, rather than plumbing. You can also get dual fuel radiators, which allow you to choose from both electric and central heating. You can turn your central heating off in the summer and use the electricity, then switch to central heating in the winter.

Radiator materials

Radiators can be made with a variety of different materials, each with their own distinct advantages. Very old radiators were made of cast iron. These are great at holding on to the heat long after the heating is turned off, but they also take a long time to heat up. Nowadays most radiators in this style are actually made of stainless steel, but some are still made of cast iron.

  • Mild steel radiators are the most common type of modern radiator. They’re low cost, but work well and are very cost-efficient. Most modern radiators are probably mild steel or stainless steel.
  • Stainless steel works much the same as mild steel, but it has the advantage of not rusting and holding on to heat for longer after the heating is turned off. They’re also more expensive, but worth it.
  • Aluminium radiators heat up quickly, cool down quickly and are very lightweight. They’re a great choice and very quick and easy for our experts to install.

Whether you have a new radiator that needs installing, or you want to replace your existing radiators, give us at No1PHD a call. Our team can help advise you on the best choice and install your radiators, whether it’s for a business or a residential property, no matter how big or small. After noticing that the house was unusually cold, we found that the heating wasn’t coming on and that our hot water had also failed. We called the team at No 1 PHD who dispatched an engineer to investigate. After discovering that the culprit was a faulty boiler part, they ordered in a new part and got it fitted as quickly as possible. The guys were great, and we couldn’t be happier.

For days, we’ve noticed a foul smell coming from outside and a gurgling sound coming from one of the drains. Whenever it would rain, the area around it would flood slightly and take ages to drain. We tried buying drain unblockers, but none seemed effective. Eventually, we turned to No 1 PHD and were left wondering why we didn’t do this sooner.
